Dumfries were convincingly beaten by a young but experienced Clydesdale team on Saturday in Glasgow,.
A slow start by the visitors, obviously lacking in match practice, togetherness and some fitness, were quickly two goals behind. Quick, incisive and direct passing from the Clydesdale midfield and attack was too much for a three man Dumfries defence still caught in their summer slumber.
Things brightened before half time with a well finished goal from Max McFarlane. This bought new hope and nearly led to an equaliser before the break. As it was chances were not converted and the half-time break saw Clydesdale leading 2:1.
The second half began more positively for Dumfries after a "stiff Captains talking to" at the break. The midfield, sometimes absent defensively in the first half, worked hard on and off the ball, closing down the Clydesdale midfield with much more intensity. Dumfries had chances to equalise but were caught off guard twice in quick succession, losing two more goals. Making the score 4:1.
At this point the more "experienced" Dumfries players began to show their fatigue and a lack of communication between McFarlane and his keeper led to a further "farcical" goal from Clydesdale.
The game ended 5:1 but despite the hilarity of some Dumfries defending the game ended with smiles, sportsmanship and pizza in the clubhouse.
Thanks yet again to Clydesdale for their hospitality off the pitch and their example on it.
We look forward to meeting again across the season.
