After facing Hillhead 5B away on Saturday, Dumfries hosted Hillhead 4s on Sunday at home in the second round of the Scottish Reserve Cup.

The game started with Hillhead dominating the ball but Dumfries limited the visitors entries to their D. On one of the occasions they did manage to play through Dumfries, the Glasgow side won a short corner which was scored towards the end of the first quarter. 0-1. Dumfries did mount a few counterattacks but were prevented from creating any chances.

The second quarter continued in a similar manner with Dumfries managing to mount some counterattacks when possible. The Hillhead pressure continued to grow and once again won a short corner which was again scored. 0-2.

Some positive words of encouragement from stand-in Captain Marshall and Dumfries came out for the second half looking to stay in the cup.

Hillhead upped the tempo in the third quarter and moved the ball, and the Dumfries defence around with much more urgency. This created more gaps for the visiting forwards and allowed one of the centre forwards to find space in the D. He rounded keeper Oakes and went to tap into an empty net before Mackiln got back and cleared off the line. This was quickly followed by another excellent chance for Hillhead but the forward shot was this time met on the line by Aitken. Unfortunately for Aitken his clearance hit his own body and a penalty flick was awarded. Oakes stood strong and saved. Dumfries then finally made a counter attack count and a long searching ball from Aitken up the line was caught by Steele who won Dumfries a short corner. Johnston pulled out to Aitken, his shot was tipped by Johnston and saved by the Hillhead keeper and Stapleton couldn't turn in the rebound.

Hillhead managed to kill off the tie in the fourth quarter after an excellent worked short corner found the Dumfries net to make it 3-0. Another flick was awarded soon after Smith's foot on the line prevented a goal. Once again Oakes stood big and saved with a strong left hand. A late Hillhead short corner led to their fourth goal, with all four coming from short corners. 0-4

A tough shift against a strong team from the league above, but defeat dumps Dumfries out of the cup and will take their place in the plate where they take on Granges 5s. Good luck to Hillhead in the next round.

The man of the match was Oakes who pulled off a number of excellent saves including two penalty flicks.
