Dumfries defeated in pre-season opener

Dumfries mens 1s ventured south to Cockermouth to face off against Keswick
hockey club in a pre-season game in preparation for the 24/25 campaign. The game
also marked the debut of both youngster F Brown and Australian import E Moore.
Once the game commenced the travelling Scotsmen (and Aussie) found themselves
under pressure and E Oakes was called into action early pulling off several Maddie
Hitch-esque saves. E Oakes worked hard to keep the score 0-0 but eventually the
hosts breached the Dumfries goal after a slick counter attack. The men in red quickly
responded through E Moore after a well worked 1-2 with F Murray. However,
Keswick once again capitalised on the break to go into half time 2-1 up. HT 2-1.
After a positive discussion at half time the travellers took to the field searching for an
equaliser.
The men from down south started the 2nd half flying out the traps and immediately
pressed to extend their lead. During this spell they scored two rapid fire goals to put
breathing space between them and the visitors. 4-1. The red army gained a foothold
in the match after a break down in a short corner; Captain Carson’s shot was saved
by the inspired Keswick keeper and the ball fell to F Brown who buried the ball for a
goal on his debut. 4-2. Keswick immediately responded in kind to again extend their
lead. 5-2. What followed was a rare collectible item- a goal for Milne Snr! Powered
on by this new shoes the stalwart of the team found himself with space and time in
the D from a well worked short corner. The veteran, then slammed the ball past the
onrushing defender and keeper. 5-3. Although they pressed for another goal, time
was against Dumfries and the score remained unchanged. FT 5-3. Many thanks for
Keswick for hosting us and we wish them luck for the upcoming season. For most
members of the squad the post match chips were the highlight of the day! The men
in red face further opposition from south of the border in the form of Carlisle who are
scheduled to play at fortress KGV on the 7th of September.
Man of the match was youngster Freddie Brown on his first team debut! Donkey of
the day was Fraser Steele, for many reasons, but mainly for failing to turn up with
any kit of his own!
